Gheorghe Asachi’s face made of thousands of students

The TUIASI students got involved in the redesigning of the indoor spaces of the university. The lecture hall T3 in the Rectorate building was completely transformed; a TUIASI alumna contributed to the redesigning of the space and the creation of the artistic concept. In only four months, the 130-place lecture hall benefited from a total modernisation process, with a special lighting system that positively influences the studying process, with newly created acoustics, as well as with a new particular symbolism.

Gheorghe Asachi’s face, the university’s spiritual patron, was made on the wall in the back of the lecture hall out of 3,000 human silhouettes of nine centimetres, laser cut in plexiglass, painted and manually glued to perforated plywood; the whole process was made by volunteering students, under the coordination of the DSS (Student Services Office) representatives and of the University’s board members involved in the designing and execution of works for the lecture hall.

The silhouettes represent students, who symbolise the relationship between tradition and future, carrying on their shoulders the whole responsibility and weight of the past: in the left side of the image, there is a representation of the succeeding generations of students over time, drawing Gheorghe Asachi’s face, while the right side symbolises the progress towards the modern university, by means of technical language elements.

The veneering contributes to an equilibration of the acoustic comfort parameters, while the lighting is one comfortable on the eye, favouring study and reading. The new lecture hall hosts debates and events, but also lectures and seminars.
